Solon and Aurora ranked high by Plain Dealer

The Comets come into the season ranked No. 8, while the Greenmen come in ranked No. 11 in the Plain Dealer’s preseason poll.

Both rankings might surprise some people. First, the Comets are probably better than No. 8 in the area, and should move up in the coming weeks. Here is what the PD had to say about them:

Defense and strong line play make the Comets solid contenders for their 10th straight playoff berth. If their offensive backfield comes along, watch out.

Solon has a very talented junior class, and, while their new starting backfield lacks experience, they don’t lack talent.

The Greenmen have a very impressive ranking for a division III public school. It’s well earned, however, and Aurora does have some top individual talent. Plus, the Greenmen have built a strong program. Here is what the PD had to say about them:

Has emerged as a powerhouse the past three seasons, with a 31-6 record. There are 16 starters back, including lineman Adam Bellamy, backs Steven Yung and Brendan Gallagher and receiver Dee Brizzolara.

Some other notes:

  1. Solon plays No. 3 Mentor in the third week of the season. St. Ignatius and Glenville are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. All four teams should make the Division I Region 1 playoffs.
  2. Solon also plays No. 15 Mayfield, No. 17 Strongsville, No 18. Brunswick later this year. The Comets start the season off with two state powers, Canton McKinley and Massillon Jackson. Head Coach Jim McQuaide has called this the toughest schedule ever.
  3. Kenston takes on No. 14 Nordonia in the third week of the season. Chardon and Nordonia should be a good barometer for how good or bad the Bombers will be this season.
  4. Aurora is the only ranked Chagrin Valley Conference team. Perry might make it into the rankings as the year goes on as well.
