Here is a quick run down of last night’s game, complete with some notes.
Perry beat Riverside 30-6 — After the first week of the season, one thing is clear: Perry is the favorite in the CVC Chagrin Division. Next week we’ll find out if Aurora or West Geauga will be the team challenging Perry this year. West G was more impressive than Aurora, but it’s early. Chagrin Falls could also be a team to watch.
- Vinny Hokavar impressed again. He tossed two touchdown passes.
- Perry poured it on early, jumping to a 23-0 lead in the second quarter.
- Mike Hanhauser paced the Pirates with 143 yards on 15 carries. He ran for two touchdowns and scored another off a hook and lateral on the first play of the game.
Kenston lost 35-0 to Kent Roosevelt - That is not a typo. It might be the worst loss in Kenston’s history. Everything went wrong for the Bombers, and Kent Roosevelt is probably not one of the tougher teams Kenston will play this season.
- Starting tailback Jimmy Tomcufclk could not play because of a tweaked ankle. His replacements managed to only run for 60 yards. Oh, and the Bombers fumbled four times.
- Kenston wants to get back to its roots of running the ball and stopping the run. They did neither.
- Kent Roosevelt scored 14 points off of Kenston’s five turnovers. It’s almost impossible to win football games with that many turnovers.
- The schedule only gets tougher for the Bombers with Chardon and Nordonia coming up. I realize that Kenston’s offense needs Tomcufclk, but if they don’t figure out something soon, this could be a very long season.
West Geauga lost 26-19 to Padua - The Wolverines played the Bruins tough before losing. Padua is one of the better Division II teams around. West G might be in for a strong season.
- The Wolverines play Riverside this week. It will be a good opportunity to see how well West G stacks up against Perry. Both teams beat Riverside last season. West G had an up-down-season where they beat some very talented teams like Perry and Riverside but lost to teams like Chagrin Falls.
Chagrin Falls defeated Woodbridge 27-21 — The Tigers once again get off to a strong start. The Tigers lost some experience, but they know they would be bigger and faster this season. Their first-year starters played well.
- One of the keys to this game — and the Tiger’s season — was how well junior quarterback Chris Trinetti would replace Brett Axner. Well, in his first start he threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Pretty impressive.
Orange defeated Bay 28-6 — Bay is not a particularly good team (they went 1-9 last season), but the Lions were impressive nonetheless. They used a combination of lights-out defense and a stout rushing attack to easily win this game.
- The Lions forced five turnovers. Anytime a team does that, they’ll be very hard to beat. Turnover differential is often a very overlooked statistic in football.
- Orange’s defense forced two fumbles and intercepted three passes, proving their mettle against both the run and pass.
- Josh Rogers rushed for 134 yards and had two touchdowns.

West G did not lose to Riverside last year. They lost to Aurora, Padua, Kenston, and Chagrin Falls. Both Perry and West G beat Riverside, with West G being Perrys only regular season loss. Good article though.

@Will,
Thanks for the heads up. Not sure how I read last year’s results wrong, but it is fixed.
