The Comets took Mentor to the brink in a game that featured five lead changes, but Solon ultimately could not pull out the victory.
It was Solon’s 5th straight loss to Mentor, and the series is now tied 7-7. Both teams might meet again for the third-straight season in the playoffs.
The game was a must win for Mentor after their lost last week to Strongsville and with an upcoming game against St. Ignatius. Mentor will be an under dog to St. Ignatius and losing to Solon might have really put the Cardinals in a hole.
In a bit of a role reversal for these two teams, Solon threw the ball well, while Mentor ran the ball well. The Cardinals only managed 55 yards passing in their spread offense, but racked up 276 yards on the ground. Solon had given up 49 and 74 yards rushing in its first two games.
Jake Voigt is starting to come into his own. He was 15 of 23 for 193 yards with a touchdown. The Comets struggled to run the ball well, however.
Solon totaled 93 yards on the ground against Mentor after averaging more than 150 in their first two games.
Solon takes on a familar foe in Mayfield this Friday. Both teams are 2-1 and looking for valuable playoff points.
