CVC and Solon pick-em week 3

Here are the games this week. There are 8 games now to pick because it is in CVC play, and the games should be much harder to pick. The first four games could go either way.

  •   Solon at Mayfield
  •   Aurora vs. Perry
  •   Chagrin Falls vs. West Geauga
  •   Kenston at Beachwood
  •   Orange at Wickliffe
  •   Kirtland at Cuyahoga Heights
  •   Newbury vs. Richmond Heights
  •   Hawken vs. Berkshire
Our predictors picks will be posted tomorrow, but what are your thoughts on this week? Both Chagrin Falls vs. West G and Aurora vs. Perry will tell us a lot about this season.

Thoughts on the CVC after three weeks

Making predictions in preseason is a fools game — even in the NFL.

Making predictions in the preseason for high school football is idiotic. After three weeks, however, the landscape becomes a lot clearer. Perry and West Geauga look like the clear front runners right now. The team everyone picked to win the CVC, Aurora, is on the verge on seeing their season fall apart.

Who would have thought:

  • Aurora would have two losses after 3 weeks.
  • Kenston would score a combined 6 points in three games.
  • West G would look so impressive.
It’s clear:
  • That West G and Perry are the class of the CVC right now. I expect Aurora to gets it groove back, but the Greenmen are off to a very rough start. And Aurora has to find its way ASAP if it wants to keep its playoff hopes alive.
  • Kenston might have one of its worst teams ever. The Bombers showed some heart against Chardon, but were handicapped by poor coaching decisions. Of course, Chardon only has 1 victory this season — over the winless Bombers. This week’s game is for the program. Kenston needs to regain some of its pride.
  • Chagrin Falls is a sleeper pick for the CVC. They are 2-1, and their only loss was in overtime to a very good NDCL team. If they can beat West G this week they’ll be right there with Perry, contending for the CVC title. Chagrin Falls beat West G 39-19, but Dave Bors has West G playing at a whole new level now.
  • That Perry team is pretty good too. They are crushing opponents each and every week. This week they face their first real test, Aurora. If the Pirates win, Aurora’s season is over, and Perry has a great shot at the playoffs and a second-straight CVC title. A loss, however, won’t do much to derail Perry’s playoff hopes.
Week 4 is big:
  • Chagrin Falls and West G clash this week. It will tell us a lot about both teams. Both teams are legitimate CVC title contenders, and the winner will be a co-favorite with Perry to win the CVC.
  • Aurora faces Perry this week. Aurora lost 17-10 last season, and this year Perry appears to be an even better team. A loss won’t knock Aurora out of CVC title contest, but it will all but slam the door on their playoff chances. Aurora needs these playoff points badly. The Greenmen’s only win was over 0-3 Crestwood.
  • Kenston had a very rough first three weeks while taking on big and talented schools. This week they get a break with Beachwood. A loss to Beachwood would be crushing for this proud program. Kenston won 41-0 last season over Beachwood, but the Bombers are lost right now. We’ll find out if Kenston can start to turn things around and rebuild.

Aurora drops from PD poll after second loss

After Aurora’s second loss of the season, The Plain Dealer dropped Aurora from their Top 25 poll.

Perry, however, moved up to No. 20. The two teams will meet this Friday night. Aurora will desperately need to win this game. A third loss would be a major blow to their playoff chances, especially with a match against West Geauga coming later this season.

But with a 27-6 loss to Twinsburg last week, there will be doubts that Aurora can hang with Perry. The Pirates have cruised to a 3-0 record so far. Perry hasn’t allowed more than 7 points in a game and has scored a minimum 30 points a game.

If West G has a strong showing this week against Chagrin Falls they should pop into the PD’s Top 25 poll. West G might be the class of the CVC right now. We’ll find out soon.

Solon dropped to No. 8 after its close loss to Mentor last week.

Solon loses a close game to Mentor

The Comets took Mentor to the brink in a game that featured five lead changes, but Solon ultimately could not pull out the victory.

It was Solon’s 5th straight loss to Mentor, and the series is now tied 7-7. Both teams might meet again for the third-straight season in the playoffs.

The game was a must win for Mentor after their lost last week to Strongsville and with an upcoming game against St. Ignatius. Mentor will be an under dog to St. Ignatius and losing to Solon might have really put the Cardinals in a hole.

In a bit of a role reversal for these two teams, Solon threw the ball well, while Mentor ran the ball well. The Cardinals only managed 55 yards passing in their spread offense, but racked up 276 yards on the ground. Solon had given up 49 and 74 yards rushing in its first two games.

Jake Voigt is starting to come into his own. He was 15 of 23 for 193 yards with a touchdown. The Comets struggled to run the ball well, however.

Solon totaled 93 yards on the ground against Mentor after averaging more than 150 in their first two games.

Solon takes on a familar foe in Mayfield this Friday. Both teams are 2-1 and looking for valuable playoff points.

Solon vs. Mentor has playoff implications

This game will tell us a lot about both teams.

Can Mentor make a third state title run in a row? Is Solon for real? Will the Comets’ offense finally find its stride?

These are some of the questions that need to be answered tonight.

We do know that Solon has a fantastic defense. They have given up a combined 17 points this season. But the offense will need to score more tonight if the Comets want to win.

The Cardinals potent offense has given the Comets trouble in the past. Mentor scored 50 points combined last year in the two meetings the Comets had. Solon doesn’t have a high powered offense, but it will need to score enough to counter the Cardinals’ attack.

The Comets are off to another quick start this season, but they face their toughest challenge yet.

Consider:

  • Mentor has won the last four meetings between these teams, including a 27-0 drubbing in their first meeting last year. The Comets badly want this one.
  • Mentor is coming off a 30-27 loss to Strongsville last week. Two loses in a row to teams worth major playoff points is not what Mentor wants.
  • The playoff implications tonight are huge. Both teams will probably win at least 7 games this season. That’s a lot of playoff points for the other team.
  • Mentor can’t afford to lose this game, because they are staring down St. Ignatius next week. If they can’t beat the Comets, they’ll probably struggle with the Wildcats. That would be three loses in a row.
  • The Comets lead the series 7-6. The series has gone in waves with one team winning several games in a row. Is the pendulum swinging back towards the Comets?

Here is what others are saying:

The PD:

Solon’s tough, veteran defense, led by linemen Sam Gaeth and Justin Woo and standout linebacker Joe Janasek, held Canton McKinley and Massillon Jackson to 17 total points. The defensive backfield matches up well against Mentor’s spread offense. Mentor’s lack of speed on defense has led to some big plays by the opposition and the Cardinals’ offense sputtered thanks to five turnovers at Strongsville last week.

PD pick: Comets’ defense prevails as Mentor’s 14-game, three-year home winning streak ends.

The News-Herald:

You know the Cardinals would love a mulligan after last week’s error-filled 30-27 loss at Strongsville. Five turnovers and Mentor still had a chance to win late in the fourth quarter is a tough pill to swallow, but Coach Steve Trivisonno and crew can rinse that taste by beating a 2-0 Solon team and going back over .500 with St. Ignatius, Cincinnati Moeller and Euclid on deck. Could be a big swing for the Cards.

The Chagrin Valley Times:

Solon takes a 2-0 season record into the game after impressive wins against Canton McKinley and Massillon Jackson. Mentor is 1-1 after suffering a heartbreaking 30-27 loss to Strongsville last week.

For McQuaide and his players, the history of Mentor and the Comets is well known. McQuaide has consistently said he welcomes a tough schedule, so that his team can play the best teams in the area.

Junior quarterback Jake Volgt said he and his team are ready for a rematch. “We’re anxious to play Mentor,” he said. “We know they ended our season the last two years. We want to get back out there and show they that we’re just as good a program as they are. We want to be competitive every time we play.”

In last Friday’s 14-7 victory over Massillon Jackson, Voigt was a key component of both touchdowns. He scored on an eight-yard rollout in the third quarter. Then, in the fourth quarter, he hooked up with wide receiver Matt Piscitello on an eight-yard TD pass. Voigt finished the game with 15 completions out of 23 attempts for 216 yards.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m., Osborne Stadium, 6477 Center St. (Ohio 615), Mentor. Call: 440-974-5304.

Records: Solon 2-0, Mentor 1-1.

CVC news and notes

Chagrin Falls loses to NDCL 33-27 in overtime — We said this was the game of the week in the CVC and it lived up to the hype, The Tigers are for real.

  • It was a memorable night for NDCL. It was their first under the lights on their home field, and, of course, fans were excited. The Tigers played NDCL very close considering the circumstances.
  • NDCL was up 21-12 heading into the fourth, before Chagrin Falls mounted a comeback.

West Geauga defeats Riverside 48-0 — We wondered if West G’s strong showing against Padua was for real. This game seem so to signify that, yes, the Wolverines are for real.

  • Perry was impressive in defeating Riverside 30-6 last week, but West G was completely dominate this past week.
Perry defeats Jefferson Area 48-0 — Speaking of dominating performances, the Pirates continue to impress. Yes, Jefferson Area is not a good team, but the Pirates are scoring a lot of points, while giving up very few.
Aurora defeats Crestwood 40-14 — A week after being surprised by Avon, the Greenmen looked sharp in easily beating Crestwood.
  • Aurora scored all 40 points in the first three quarters, before throttling back heavily in the 4th.
  • Avon was impressive in defeating Wellington 41-13 last night. Maybe Avon is just that good.
Kenston lost to Chardon 7-3 — The Bombers looked better this past week, but made too many mistakes and too many suspect play calls to pull out the win. The Bombers looked like they should have won, but should-haves don’t give you playoff points.
  • Kenston struggled to run the ball again, gaining only 44 yards on 27 carries. Chardon kept no one deep and dared the Bombers to throw the ball. It would be tough for anyone to run on the defense Chardon played last night, and the Bombers failed to exploit Chardon deep.
  • The Bombers threw the ball fairly well, but two costly interceptions cost Kenston points. One came near the goal line and the other was fairly deep into Chardon territory.
  • Kenston’s defense allowed 0 passing yards, and played Chardon’s tough run offense well.
Orange lost to Midpark 39-6 — The Lions came back down to earth this week against Midpark.
  • Midpark jumped out early with 19 first-quarter points to bury Orange. Midpark was up 26-0 at the half.
  • Orange had no answers for Midpark’s potent ground attack. Senior Jamaine Cook ran for 285 yards and 5 touchdowns on 21 carries.
We’ll post more as we get more information.
